Exterior marketing and communication signage

The placement of any signage on campus requires review by multiple units to ensure that it functions efficiently and intuitively while minimizing visual clutter and maximizing brand consistency. Enterprise Brand Strategy and Management reviews all signage to ensure brand alignment and coordinates with the Office of the University Architect and Facilities Development and Management, as appropriate. If approved, signage orders will be printed through the ASU Print and Imaging Lab. The guidelines on this page detail what options units may use for exterior marketing and communications signage as well as how to submit those designs for approval.

4-by-8 framed banners

4-by-8 framed banners, also referred to as G1 metal banner frames, are university-approved architectural frames that allow for 4-by-8 printed banner inserts. The intent of this banner type is to convey festive decoration and informational messages to support the university’s cultural, arts, social and educational programs. The use and duration of the display are to be associated with a scheduled event or period of time. These frames are not to be used in place of permanent or long-term architectural sign types.

If your unit has a 4-by-8 framed banner, approval is required on the banner insert before printing and posting. If your banner has already been reviewed and approved by Enterprise Brand Strategy and Management and you are hanging the exact same banner again, you do not need to submit it for review again.

Business and Finance maintain five 4-by-8 framed banners on the Tempe campus for university initiatives. These banners typically display walk-only zone and tobacco-free initiative banners.

4-by-8 framed banners specifications:

Banner dimensions: 8’-0”h x 4’-0”w

Quantity: One each per frame (content must be displayed on each side of banner frame)

Design and maintenance:

  • Designs must fully comply with university brand standards.
  • Banners do not need to include the university logo in the design; however, unit logos of the appropriate school, college or center must be utilized to identify the sponsoring unit.
  • Commercial sponsor and affiliate logo or recognition is limited to 20% of a message if deemed appropriate and relevant to the messaging by Enterprise Brand Strategy and Management. The display of any commercial logo may not be in conflict with any existing ASU rights agreements.
  • Banners with a solely commercial message are prohibited.
  • Banners shall not be attached to any structure other than the 4-by-8 G1 banner frames, unless otherwise approved for university initiatives. Banners are restricted from being mounted to building structures, sign posts, trees or other plant materials.
  • Units are responsible for any cost associated with banner installation and removal. The university assumes no responsibility for loss or damage to the banners on display. Should damage occur to any installed banners, the unit must have the banner reprinted through the Print and Imaging Lab.

Messaging:

  • Messaging must relate to university or student-oriented initiatives and events.
  • Banners must abide by university policies and shall not contain language, symbols or graphics that are obscene or discriminatory in nature. Messages that are political or controversial in nature or messages that are personal in nature will not be allowed. Messages promoting hate speech or criminal behavior under federal, state or local laws will not be allowed.
  • Messages shall not create confusion with traffic signals or signs by including words on a banner such as STOP, YIELD, SLOW, etc. Neither shall the banner contain icons of any traffic signaling, colorations or instructions.

How can my unit purchase a 4-by-8 sign?

As of April 2021, ASU executive leadership has instructed that no new 4-by-8 framed banner signs be added while digital alternatives are being researched.

Existing banner frames may be updated with new banner inserts, but units are encouraged to use digital signage options through their Four Winds digital screens.

As new options become available, the community will be updated through the High Five monthly newsletter.

Reservation process

  • Reservations can be made for no more than a 30-day duration (may be extended if space is available).
    • Reservations are approved on a first-come, first-served basis. We ask that requestors be flexible, as urgent university messaging takes precedence over all other reservations.
