Flying a drone on campus

If you’re planning to film on or above any ASU campus or property using a drone, you must comply with the ASU Unmanned Aircraft Systems policy, which includes prior approval from ASU Risk and Emergency ManagementAll documentation and forms must be submitted at least 15 days prior to the requested flight date.

Drone requirements and application

To request permission, individuals should:

  • Complete an Unmanned Aircraft Systems Request Form
    • Requestors must include a copy of their Federal Aviation Administration UAS certificate of registration, flight plan diagram and remote pilot's license. 
    • Discuss this request with your unit’s lead communicator so they are aware of this request. Clear communication with leads will prevent confusion and help reduce the time for any approvals required.

  • Non-ASU affiliates must sign a Release, Indemnity and Assumption of Risk Agreement
    • Along with the items outlined in step one, non-ASU affiliates must also include a completed agreement and a copy of the certificate of insurance (aviation liability insurance with minimal limits of $1 million) within the request.
    • Use the following ASU address in your paperwork:

  • All documents and forms are reviewed by Risk and Emergency Management.
    • If approved, the requestor will be notified and issued a permit. 
    • If denied, a representative from Risk and Emergency Management will connect with the requestor to discuss their initial request. 
    • If you have questions, contact Tarnell Smith in Risk and Emergency Management.
  • Additional approvals may be required depending on which campus you are flying over.
    • Downtown Phoenix campus: The Downtown Phoenix campus is in the flight path of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. You will need a LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) form if you are flying below 100 feet AGL (Above Ground Level).  Please submit the LAANC before the flight. If you plan to fly 100-400 feet AGL you will need to fill out an Airspace Authorization waiver (FAA Part 107.41) through faadronezone.faa.gov and have it approved by the FAA prior to the time of flight. 
    • Polytechnic campus: The Polytechnic campus is in the flight path for Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. You will need to fill out an Airspace Authorization waiver (FAA Part 107.41) through faadronezone.faa.gov and have it approved by the FAA prior to the time of flight.
    • Tempe campus: The Tempe campus is in the flight path of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. You will need a LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) form if you are flying below 100 feet AGL (Above Ground Level).  Please submit the LAANC before the flight.     • West Valley campus: West Valley campus has no airspace restrictions.
    • For all flights over 400 feet Above Ground Level:  You will need to fill out an Operations limit: Altitude waiver (FAA Part 107.51(b)) through faadronezone.faa.gov and have it approved by the FAA prior to the time of flight.
