There are two types of releases required. The first is to be signed by human subjects of any photo or filming including audio. This gives ASU the right to use their voices and images. This is to be signed by all individuals no matter who takes the film or recording. This is called the Photo/Recording Subject Release.
The second form is to be signed by each filmer or photographer who takes photos or recordings. This form is called the Filmer and Recorder Agreement. Photographers who are ASU employees do not need to sign. However, independent contractors or anyone else who is not an ASU employee photographer must sign. Departments should obtain a Filmer and Recorder Agreement for all photographs that have not been taken by an ASU employee. The Filmer and Recorder Agreement must remain on file as long as the film/recording is in use.
Permission is granted to ASU departments to use photographs taken by ASU's university photographer; photo releases are not required for these photos. Photo releases are collected for all photos taken by the ASU university photographer.
The campuses of ASU are public property, and anyone can take exterior photos of the buildings and grounds for personal, noncommercial use. Note that even when images are used for a noncommercial purpose, ASU reserves the right to revoke permission if the images are used in a way that, in the opinion of ASU, is in poor taste or would reflect badly on ASU.
These release forms have been approved by ASU's Office of General Counsel.
